The World Innovators University Institute (WIU) has lauded the Federal Government of Nigeria for its approval and unveiling of a comprehensive new national curriculum for basic and senior secondary education, describing it as a “decisive step toward future-ready learning for every child.”
The new curriculum, set for a phased implementation starting in the 2025/2026 academic session, represents a significant modernization of Nigeria’s educational offerings. Key features include a rebalanced subject load to improve learning depth and the integration of critical contemporary competencies such as digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), coding, robotics, media literacy, entrepreneurship, and citizenship studies.
In a statement, the global centre pledged its full support to ensure the reform translates into tangible classroom impact.
“By foregrounding digital competencies, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and civic literacy, this reform aligns schooling with the demands of a fast-changing economy and society,” said Prof. Monday Anyairo, Global President of World Innovators University.
He opined that the Institute is prepared to work with federal and state authorities, schools, teacher education institutions, and development partners to support this crucial transition.
Echoing this sentiment, Prof. Dr. Ashok K. Gupta, Provost of World Innovators University, emphasized the central role of teachers in the reform’s success.
“Great curricula become great learning only through well-supported teachers. Our immediate focus is practical: equipping educators to teach AI and coding safely and confidently, and providing low-cost, open resources that work in real Nigerian classrooms,” he posited.
To assist with an effective and equitable rollout, the WIU Institute announced a detailed, multi-year support package for Nigeria spanning 2025 to 2027.
The initiative is built around six key pillars, ranging from teacher capacity development which will comprise of a suite of short courses and training for educators on AI literacy, coding pedagogy, and digital citizenship, targeting an initial 1,000 teachers across all six geopolitical zones.
In addition, availing instructors with Open Educational Resources (OER) through development of free, curriculum-aligned lesson plans, worksheets, and activities optimised for low-bandwidth and offline environments.
Moreover, WIU will see how to help institutions develop school innovation labs by providing low-cost “lab in a box” starter kits for robotics and STEM projects tailored to resource-constrained settings.
Assessment tool kits, implementation research endeavours and evolving of policy partnerships with relevant institutions, development agencies and regulators will be crucial to making a success of the new academic policy thrust of the government.
The reform addresses an urgent national need to create a more relevant, skills-aligned education system that improves employability and fosters national cohesion. The WIU Institute has extended an invitation for collaboration to State Ministries of Education, SUBEBs, and other partners seeking practical support for the curriculum’s implementation.
